ChatGPT added image generation in 2024 using DALL-E 3, making AI photo creation available to hundreds of millions of users with a simple text prompt. "Generate a professional headshot of a 35-year-old woman with brown hair" takes about 10 seconds and produces a photorealistic portrait.

For scammers, this is a free, unlimited supply of unique fake profile photos. • Text is stylized or wrong. Any text in the background — signs, books, labels — is often stylized, incorrect, or partly illegible. AI models struggle with real text.
• Perfect symmetry. Human faces are naturally asymmetric. ChatGPT/DALL-E tends to produce faces that are more symmetrical than any real person.
• Photographic perfection in informal contexts. A photo supposedly taken at a party or on a hike that has professional lighting, perfect focus, and studio-quality composition.
• Background disconnection. The subject looks slightly "pasted into" the background — subtle inconsistencies in how lighting wraps around the subject.
